Negotiation or Ultimatum?

So, this hasn't been the best 1st day of summer break.  Now I know why for the past two years I insisted on camping for a week starting on the first day of break.  Wow.  The boys (well, two) have been especially feisty and argumentative.  It doesn't help that this is the ODDEST spring ever in my 6 years in San Jose.  RAIN?  Really?  I thought it didn't rain from mid April until November.  However, we've had rain until June, and it's going to rain this weekend?  ARGH!!  So today was cloudy and cooler in the high 60's; that doesn't help cheer up kids- or mommies!

Anyway, I've found myself negotiating and/or giving ultimatums all day.  Before starting a movie after dinner, "No movie until everything in the garage is put away."  "No one is eating dinner until the dog is fed."  "I'll give you 2 marbles for every 5 broken water balloon pieces you pick up from outside."  I've spent my day redirecting, ignoring, playing, and checking off things from my own list every now and then. I'm really hoping that tomorrow's attitudes are better.  It will probably help to see Russ, too.  He's been late every night but one of the past four.  I'M ready for Daddy to be here, to help give attention, and to make us laugh.  He's so good at that!  Despite the rain, we WILL be happy, Dammit!  :)

My first post!

Russ took the boys backpacking over Memorial Day weekend, and we've had our friends' three boys here with us the past three days.  This has made for some wonderful conversations with 6 boys.  Of course this morning, one child was still battling the itch from a poison oak reaction.  Naturally, I had to ask him how his balls were feeling before I realized what I had just said aloud.  Of course, no one skipped a beat and thought it a very natural topic of conversation at breakfast.
